A wet belt (also called a “belt-in-oil” timing belt) is a timing belt that runs inside the engine, submerged in oil, instead of outside the engine like a traditional cambelt. Peugeot, Citroën and DS fit them to the 1.0 and 1.2 PureTech petrol engine to improve efficiency and cut emissions.
The problem is the same one that affects any wet belt design: constant contact with engine oil wears the belt down faster than a conventional dry belt. As it degrades it sheds small pieces of rubber into the oil, and because the belt is sealed inside the engine, that debris has nowhere to go. It circulates in the oil and can block the oil pickup or the vacuum pump, starving the engine of lubrication or affecting brake assistance. In the worst cases this causes complete engine failure, a repair that often costs more than the car is worth.
PureTech wet belts have a particular reputation for giving very little warning before they fail, more so than most other wet belt designs. Proactive replacement, rather than waiting for a fault to show up, is the only reliable way to avoid it.
See our full PureTech wet belt vs cambelt comparison for how the two designs differ.
Fitment depends on the exact engine code, not just the model name or year. The confirmed wet belt engines are the 1.0 and 1.2 PureTech petrol (engine codes EB2, EB2DT, EB2DTS, EB2ADTD and EB2ADTX), fitted across the Peugeot 208, 2008, 308, 3008, 5008, 408 and Rifter, the Citroën C3, C4, C5, C3 Aircross, C4 Cactus and Berlingo, and the DS3, DS4 and DS7, broadly from 2012 to 2022/23.
Common mix-up worth clearing up: the newer 48V hybrid PureTech engines (codes EB2LTED and EB2LTEDH2), introduced from 2023, switched to a timing chain. But plenty of non-hybrid 2023 to 2025 PureTech cars still use the wet belt, so the model year alone isn’t a reliable guide, the engine code is what matters.
See the full model, engine and year breakdown in our PureTech wet belt model guide.

Check My CarPureTech wet belts have a reputation for failing with very little warning, more so than most other wet belt engines, and many suffer serious damage with no clear symptoms beforehand at all. Where symptoms do show, watch for a rough or lumpy idle (particularly at cold start or when stationary in traffic), a brief metallic rattle on cold start that fades after a few seconds, an oil pressure warning light, a harder than usual brake pedal, or unusual ticking or squealing from the front of the engine.
Because the belt can fail with no warning at all, we’d recommend not waiting for symptoms and instead working to a mileage and age based interval, particularly if you don’t know the belt’s replacement history. See the full breakdown of warning signs, including what’s urgent and what can wait for a booking.
We’re an independent garage without the overheads or the booking backlog of a main dealer, so we can do the same job for less.
Dealer pricing comparison reflects typical UK market data for this job, published by independent motoring and specialist sources.
Being cheaper than a main dealer doesn’t mean cutting corners. It means lower overheads, not a lower standard. Every wet belt job here uses genuine manufacturer parts, and we go through a few extra steps some garages skip to save time.
It’s that extra hour of stripping, cleaning and testing that stops a wet belt replacement from coming back as an oil starvation problem a few months later.
It depends on the exact engine code and build date, not just the model name, since two of the same model a year apart can be different. Bring your registration to us and we’ll check for certain, free of charge.
Every job includes all timing components in genuine manufacturer parts, plus a full oil and filter change. We also remove and clean the sump, clean the oil pickup pipe, clean the oil pump where applicable, and fully test the vehicle once the work is complete, steps some garages skip to save time.
The belt can shed debris into the oil and starve the engine of lubrication, which can lead to complete engine failure. This is a much larger repair than the belt replacement itself, and often costs more than the car is worth.
Stellantis generally treats the timing belt as a scheduled maintenance item rather than a warranty item, so replacement is typically at the owner’s cost regardless of age, unless a specific manufacturer campaign applies to your car. Worth checking with your dealer if you think yours might qualify.
The 48V hybrid PureTech engines introduced from 2023 use a timing chain rather than a wet belt. However plenty of non-hybrid PureTech cars built in 2023 and after still have the wet belt, so the engine code is the only reliable way to check, not the model year.
It depends on the exact engine and vehicle. We’ll confirm an exact timeframe when you book.
