What is a Ford wet belt?

A wet belt (also called a "belt-in-oil" timing belt) is a timing belt that runs inside the engine, submerged in oil, instead of outside the engine like a traditional cambelt. Ford fits them to certain EcoBoost petrol and EcoBlue diesel engines to improve efficiency and cut emissions.

The problem is that constant contact with engine oil wears the belt down faster than a conventional dry belt. As it degrades it sheds small pieces of rubber into the oil, and because the belt is sealed inside the engine, that debris has nowhere to go. It circulates in the oil and can block the oil pump pickup, starving the engine of lubrication. In the worst cases this causes complete engine failure, a repair that often costs more than the car is worth.

Unlike a snapped cambelt, a failing wet belt usually gives very little warning. Proactive replacement, rather than waiting for a fault to show up, is the only reliable way to avoid it.

See our full wet belt vs cambelt comparison for how the two designs differ.

Which Ford models have a wet belt?

Fitment depends on the exact engine, not just the model name or year. The confirmed wet belt engines are the 1.0 EcoBoost petrol, 1.1 Ti-VCT petrol and 2.0 EcoBlue diesel, fitted across Fiesta, Focus, Transit, Kuga, Mondeo and more from 2012 onwards.

Common mix-up worth clearing up: the 1.5 EcoBlue diesel is not a wet belt, despite appearing on plenty of "which cars have a wet belt" lists. Its real weak point is a different, internal timing chain.

Warning signs & when to replace it

Ford's original guidance was 10 years or 150,000 miles. In practice that's proved too long, and Ford has since cut its own guidance for some models to 6 years or 100,000 miles after real-world failures. We recommend treating 6 years or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first, as the safer cut-off, especially if your car does a lot of short journeys, since the belt ages with time as well as mileage.

Watch for a rattle on cold start, a low oil pressure warning light, rougher idling, or rubber debris in the oil at a service. Any of these on an affected Ford is worth getting checked rather than ignored. See the full breakdown of warning signs, including what's urgent and what can wait for a booking.

⚠ If an oil pressure warning light appears on a wet belt engine, stop driving and get it checked immediately. Continuing to drive is what turns a belt replacement into an engine rebuild.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my Ford has a wet belt?

It depends on the exact engine and build date, not just the model name. Two of the same model a year apart can be different. Bring us your registration and we'll check for certain, free of charge.

What happens if I ignore a failing wet belt?

The belt can shed debris into the oil and starve the engine of lubrication, which can lead to complete engine failure. This is a much larger repair than the belt replacement itself, and often costs more than the car is worth.

Is a wet belt replacement covered under warranty?

Ford treats the timing belt as a scheduled maintenance item rather than a warranty item, so replacement is typically at the owner's cost regardless of age, unless a specific manufacturer campaign applies to your car.

Is the 1.5 EcoBlue diesel a wet belt engine?

No, despite appearing on many "wet belt" lists online, the 1.5 EcoBlue diesel uses a conventional dry belt. Its actual weak point is a shorter internal timing chain, which is a different fault entirely.

How long does a wet belt replacement take?

Typically around 3 days, depending on parts availability and how busy we are. We'll confirm an exact timeframe when you book.
