Which Ford Models Have a Wet Belt?

A model by model, engine by engine guide to which Fords use a wet belt (belt in oil) timing system, and which don't.

Already know your Ford has a wet belt? See our wet belt replacement service.

The quick answer

Ford wet belts are not fitted across the board, they are used on specific engines: the 1.0 EcoBoost and 1.1 Ti-VCT petrols, and the 2.0 EcoBlue diesel, across the Fiesta, Focus, Transit, Kuga and more from 2012 onwards. Check the table below for your exact model and year.

Two examples of the same model a year apart can have completely different engines, which is why the table below is organised by engine rather than model.

Confirmed wet belt engines

Cross-checked across independent motoring sources. Where sources agreed, we've treated it as solid. Where they disagreed, we've flagged it below.

EngineModelsYears
1.0 EcoBoost petrolFiesta, Focus, B-Max, C-Max, EcoSport, Mondeo 1.0, Transit Courier/Connect 1.02012 – c.2018/19
1.1 Ti-VCT petrolFiesta2017 – 2023
2.0 EcoBlue dieselTransit, Transit Custom, Ranger (2019 on), Kuga diesel, Mondeo, S-Max, Galaxy, Focus 2.0 diesel2016 – present
Common mix-up worth clearing up: the 1.5 EcoBlue diesel is not a wet belt, despite appearing on plenty of "which cars have a wet belt" lists. It's a conventional dry belt. Its real weak point is a different, internal timing chain. If you're not sure which engine your Ford has, the safest option is to bring it in and let us check rather than go by the badge or the year.

Chain-driven or dry belt, not a wet belt

Worth ruling out explicitly, since customers often ask:

  • 1.5 EcoBoost "Dragon" petrol (Focus, Fiesta ST, Puma ST, Kuga 1.5), chain-driven, though it does have a smaller wet oil-pump belt
  • 1.6 / 2.0 EcoBoost petrol, chain-driven
  • Puma 1.0 EcoBoost (2019 on), should be chain-driven. A few sources say the very earliest examples may have had a wet belt, so if yours is an early car, check by registration
  • Post-2018/19 Fiesta and Focus 1.0 EcoBoost, switched to a timing chain
  • Kuga petrol (2019 on), chain-driven. The 2012 to 2018 Kuga 1.5 and 1.6 EcoBoost falls in the disputed range below
One genuinely disputed area: some sources list the 2014 to 2018 four-cylinder 1.5/1.6 EcoBoost (older Focus, Kuga, Mondeo, C-Max) as having had both wet belt and dry belt or chain versions during that run. We haven't been able to fully resolve this from public sources. If your Ford falls into this range, a VIN or engine check is the safe answer, which is what every source agrees on anyway.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find out what engine my Ford has?

The clearest way is your V5C logbook or a VIN check, since the model name and year alone aren't always enough. Bring your registration to us and we'll check for certain, free of charge.

Does every 1.0 EcoBoost Fiesta have a wet belt?

Most do, from around 2012 up to roughly 2018/19, when Ford switched this engine to a timing chain. Because both versions were sold alongside each other for a period, an engine check is the safest way to be certain.

Is the 1.5 EcoBlue diesel a wet belt engine?

No, despite appearing on many "wet belt" lists online, the 1.5 EcoBlue diesel uses a conventional dry belt. Its actual weak point is a shorter internal timing chain, which is a different fault entirely.

What if my exact model and year isn't listed here?

Fitment has changed over the years in ways that aren't always obvious from the outside. If you're not sure, the safest option is to bring your car in and let us check the actual engine rather than go by the model name or year alone.

Are "wet belt" and "belt-in-oil" the same thing?

Yes, they're two names for the same design. Ford and the wider motor trade use both terms interchangeably for a timing belt that runs submerged in engine oil rather than outside the engine.

Does the Ford Puma have a wet belt?

The Puma 1.0 EcoBoost (2019 on) should be chain-driven, and the Puma ST 1.5 is chain-driven. A few sources say the earliest 1.0 cars may have had a wet belt, so check by registration if yours is an early car.

Does the Ford Kuga have a wet belt?

The 2.0 EcoBlue diesel does. The 1.5 EcoBlue diesel has a dry belt, and petrol Kugas from 2019 are chain-driven. The 2012 to 2018 1.5 and 1.6 EcoBoost petrol is a disputed range, so check by registration.

Does the Ford Focus have a wet belt?

The 1.0 EcoBoost petrol (2012 to around 2018/19) and the 2.0 EcoBlue diesel do. The 1.5 EcoBoost is chain-driven. Some 2014 to 2018 four-cylinder EcoBoost models are disputed, so check by registration.

Does the Ford C-Max have a wet belt?

The 1.0 EcoBoost petrol (2012 to around 2018/19) does. Some older 1.5 and 1.6 EcoBoost cars (2014 to 2018) are a disputed range, so a registration check is the safe answer.

Does the Ford Galaxy have a wet belt?

The 2.0 EcoBlue diesel does. If you are not sure which engine your Galaxy has, we can check it by registration, free of charge.

Are all Ford EcoBoost engines wet belt?

No. The wet belt EcoBoost is the 1.0 petrol (2012 to around 2018/19). The 1.5 EcoBoost and the 2.0 EcoBoost petrols are chain-driven, although the 2014 to 2018 four-cylinder 1.5 and 1.6 range is disputed, so check by registration.

Think your Ford might have a wet belt?

Bring it in and we'll check the exact engine for free. If it needs replacing, we offer a fixed-price service with around a 3 day turnaround.
